Sauber are the first Formula One team to unveil their car for the 2017 season.
The C36 features a striking new livery. The car being primarily blue and white with a gold front wing and gold detailing along the sides of the car and the wing mirrors. The gold paint is a way of celebrating Sauber’s 25 year anniversary in Formula One.
According to Sauber, the car has been “redesigned from scratch” and they say “there is not a single part that could be adopted from its C35 predecessor.” However, the car will feature the 2016 Ferrari engine.
Sauber have claimed that the majority of the work that went into the car was reducing the drag coefficient caused by the larger tyres introduced for 2017. The team stated that “the aero concept includes the optimisation of the front and rear wings and the underfloor. The radiator, the side pods and the bodywork were designed to be as slim as possible”
The new regulations for this year will mean that the cars will feature a new delta shaped front wing, a lower, wider rear wing as well as the bigger tyres. Underneath the floor has been revised and is now wider to enable the cars to generate far more downforce, estimated to be a 30% increase and far higher cornering speeds.Whilst it is disguised in black on the C36 it is expected that all cars will feature a new tail fin behind the engine cover.
This year’s Sauber will be driven by Pascal Wehrlein, who just lost out on the seat at Mercedes to Bottas, and he will be joined by Marcus Ericsson. Although Wehrlein will miss the first pre-season test through a neck injury he sustained in a crash during the Race Of Champions in Miami.
It is also Sauber’s first year under the ownership of Swiss investment group, Longbow Finance, who bought the team from founder Peter Sauber and team boss Monisha Kaltenborn in July.
